The first step in learning how to grow grapes is the quality of soil that they will be planted in. They need good drainage. Prior to planting, the soil should be prepared or enriched by adding humus content such as manure particularly if soil type is a fine silt or clay loam.

In larger areas such as vineyards, the growing of a green manure cover crop such as clover, ryegrass or alfalfa which is than ploughed in prior to planting is recommended for improving soil conditions.

The addition of fertilizer during the growing season should be implemented if growing these grapes on sandy soil and hill tops, but do not fertilize later than mid summer so that the plants gradually go into a full dormant state for winter.

Most problems encountered as to how to grow grapes successfully is that a poor soil bed was used for plantings. Grapes need a moderately fertile soil. To ensure that the fruits will have a high sugar content essential for juice, wine and eating, the vines must also have full sunlight.

The type of grape choosen will make a hugh difference on the success of the plants becoming established and surviving winter conditions, especially in areas subject to cooler winters.

You will need to pay attention to your growing zone and the recommended grape varieties offered for this specific zone wherever you are in the world. American grape varieties such as “Campbell’s Early,” is widely planted and also eaten fresh.

Others, such as “Niagara”, are popular and hardy. Buffalo is considered a good home garden grape and Concord is a popular, hardy grape used for wine and juice. Other grapes such as the european varieties can be grown in some areas of coastal British Columbia, southern Ontario and many areas in the States.

These varieties include “Scarlet”, “Muscat Alexandria” (raisin variety), and “Flame Tokay.” Your particular reason for growing grapes such as eating fresh fruit, wine or juice making will also assist in the selection of grapes choosen.

Grapevines should be planted early spring or fall within holes slightly deeper and wider than their root system, planted in rows with individual plants about 6 feet apart and rows that are approximately 8 feet apart.

New vines can be started from hardwood cuttings that can be taken late fall, pruned 8 to 12 inches that have a top and bottom bud. These cuttings are than dug in just deep enough to allow the top bud to appear above the ground. Grapes require a lot of water.

They use up nutrients quickly and fertilizer such as 10-6-4 or 10-10-10 plus even additional nitrogen is often needed. Mulching with straw is recommended. One should encourage a good root system to develop by pinching back all the shoots but the strongest during the first year.

How To Grow Grapes:

Grape vines can be cane trained or head trained. Or one may wish to grow grapes on walls, arbors or pergolas.

Pruning should commence in their second season and pruned according to your specific selection with a variety of good pruning instructions found in many gardening books and on the internet.

Once your grapes start to bear fruit which will take a few years, tasting for sweetness and flavor will determine when they are ready to pick. Color in some varieties will also determine maturity.

Once picked, they do not ripen further. How to grow grapes that are ideal for eating, wine and juice making will take some practice, but one is well rewarded when they have mastered this technique.

How to Grow Seedless Grapes

I often receive questions about growing seedless grapes. With this article, I will try to clear up some of the mysteries of growing seedless grapes.

Where do seedless grapes come from?
 
No one really knows for sure where seedless grapes first came from, or when it was first grown, but it is believed to be from a mutation that happened several thousands of years ago, in what is known today as Afghanistan. The grape vine that mutated, produced grapes without any seeds.
 
Now the question is, how did they reproduce this grape vine? The most obvious answer would be that cuttings or shoots from this grape vine, where planted in several different locations in this area. These new grape vines also produced seedless grapes and from there the whole seedless grape industry has its origin.
 
How to grow seedless grapes?
 
The only way you can grow seedless grapes is if you can get some buds, canes or cuttings from another grower or nursery, who has seedless grapes. Because seedless grapes have no seeds, they cannot be reproduced with seeds (obvious, isn’t it? J).
 
The variety, Thompson Seedless or better known as Sultana or Green Sultana, has been around for years and is probably the most well known variety in the world. The problem with most seedless grapes, like Thompson Seedless, is that they naturally produce very small berries. 
 
The export market or fresh fruit market the past few years, became such a competitive environment, that growers needed to up their game in producing better looking, sweeter grapes with larger berries.
 
Allot of research, and off course money, was spend on finding ways to grow better quality grapes without loosing the natural characteristics and taste of the grapes. Cultivation practices, the introduction of natural growing hormones like Gibberellic Acid (GIB) and CPPU and reducing crop load to optimize berry size, all contributed to producing the best quality Thompson Seedless and many other seedless varieties, that has ever introduced to the market.
 
For any grape grower or grape lover to “really” understand and know what effort and how much money goes into producing seedless grapes, with a berry size of +- 21mm or 13/16 inches, isn’t that easy. Growing seedless grapes of this quality takes time, allot of risk and some really good viticultural knowledge. 
 
How seedless are seedless grapes?
 
In the early years, and even with some varieties today, it was found that many of the so called seedless varieties, actually have vestigial seed traces. Normally these seeds have a soft seed coat and most of the times you wouldn’t even notice it, while eating the berries – this will differ from variety to variety.
 
Can I grow seedless grapes?
 
In the past, most of the seedless varieties wasn’t cold hardy enough to withstand harsh winters conditions, but excellent breeding programs and allot of scientific experimentation, new seedless varieties where specially bred for these condition. Varieties like Canadice, Einset Seedless, Reliance, and Vanessa are just some of these varieties.
 
As far as viticultural practises, most small vineyard owners and new grape growers find it very hard to produce really good quality seedless grapes. This off course will change as you learn more about growing grapes and how your grape vines adapt in your climate. 
 
While learning to grow top quality seedless grapes, you could make mistakes that will cost you your crop. As said earlier; it takes time, it pose some risk and takes knowledge, believe me. 
 
Let me give you an example. We use GA (Gibberellic Acid remember?) to help on the natural thinning out of Thompson Seedless on my farm. The rule of thumb where we live, is to spray 3 thinning out sprays of a 10, 10, and a 20 ppm (particles per million) GIB. This year however, the weather was so bad (the fluid remember?), during flowering that we knew for certain that the Thompson Seedless will abort much harder. I changed the recipe to 10, 20, 10 ppm and had great results. This off course comes with years of experience and some good faith!
 
With extremely dry and hot conditions during flowering, the grape vine tends to abort berries much quicker. You therefore kneed to know how your grape vine would react to certain weather conditions.
 
Growing seedless grapes can be a rewarding experience, as this is the most sought-after grapes in the world, but it’s not the easiest grapes to grow.

Can Grape Seed Extract Help Hair Loss

Both men and women can experience inadequate hair growth and hair loss. Hair loss patients always want to try alternative therapies to treat their condition instead of taking medicine. They also determined that proanthocyanidins converted the telogen (non-growing) phase of hair growth into the anagen (growing) phase of hair growth. In this experiment, proanthocyanidins displayed hair-cycle-converting activity which was similar to that of Minoxidil.

Grape seed extract has not been studied by the FDA for safety or effectiveness, so all potential side effects may not be known. Reported side effects include nausea, dizziness, high blood pressure and headaches. People taking blood thinners should avoid taking it. Besides, children and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised not to take it. As with all medications or supplements, consult your doctor before beginning any new treatment.

Apart from grape seed extract, Aloe vera may also help treat hair loss, for it contains aloenin, a purported hair growth stimulant. Applying aloe vera gel to the scalp may promote hair health and guard against hair loss by helping balance pH levels. Allow the gel to penetrate scalp for 20 minutes then rinse thoroughly. Is Acai the world’s most powerful superfood?

The acai berry consists usually of a pit, and only 10 per cent of the berry is edible. It is small, round, and dark purple in color. It resembles a grape, but it is usually smaller and darker. Acai also boasts of more calcium content than milk.

Studies show that aside from the benefits mentioned, taking acai helps protect you from viruses and prostate concerns. It also helps improve lipoprotein metabolism and reinforces your immune system. Diverse Drinks: Red vs. White Grape Wines

Grapes wines are known for their long record with human kind. From the ancient Greeks who wrote great epics centered about wine, to the wine-loving French that mysteriously never gain pounds even when their diet is full of saturated fat. And the list of the varieties of such wines is about as long as their history; with each kind of wine being in a class of its own.

But if you must simply divide the wine according to its purpose and taste, a choice between white wine and red wine would be the most appropriate difference between them.

While it may be an oversimplification to group all the grapes wines in the world into twocategories, most wines that come from grapes can be prepared in two ways: fermenting them with the skins, or without the skins. The former produces red wine, and the latter produces white wine.

Here is a quick breakdown of the two main differences between red wines and white wines.

Red wines are called red wines not because they are blue or black or orange or pink: it is because they are red.

From deep hues of red to lighter color tone of red, all grapes wines that are dark and opaque are called red wines. This is because of the tannins in the grape skins that dyes the wine red, and gives red wine its unique color. Now take note that a few red wines may appear bluish or even blackish, but shine a light through them and you will see a shade of red there somewhere.

While red wine is called red, white wine is called white not because of its color, but its lack thereof. White grapes wines are fermented without the skin; only the pulp of the grapes is left to ferment in the vats.

This causes the solution to be clear, as most grape pulp is clear and transparent. Without any skin to provide the tannins, the white wine then does not gain color: making it clear by nature.

Because of the presence of a high amount of tannins in the solution, red wines have a distinctly stronger and more complex taste; often to the disliking of newcomers to the wine scene. This heavy, strong taste makes red wine go well with foods that are equally strong and complex in nature. Beef, lamb, duck, sausages, and other meats are prime matches for red wines.

Conversely, the lack of tannins in white wines gives them a tangy, almost fruity flavor. This makes them easier to the palette, and goes well with foods that are light in flavor too. It helps you savor the taste without overpowering the taste buds, like what red wines tend to do. This makes white wines ideal for meals with chicken, seafood, turkey and other light foods.

Remember, there are many other types of grapes wines out there, and it would not do them justice to simply be grouped into these two very broad categories of red and white wine. Just learn to appreciate the flavor and texture of each wine, whether dark or transparvarietiesent, and you will eventually understand why this broad categorization simply will not be able to encompass all the wines out there in the world.
