Grape growing can be a very satisfying hobby. All you need to grow grapes is an area in your back yard that well drained and not so rich in nutrients. The grape seems to do better in poor soil. When planting the vines in a rich soil, the nutrients will go to growing more leave and nonproducing vines. Whereas with poor soil, what nutrients are in the soil will go toward the production of fruit and more fruit bearing vines. The best place to plant the vines is on the south side of a hill where there is plenty of air circulation and plenty of sunshine. Never plant your vineyard in a shady area, because the grapes need plenty of sunlight in order for the fruit to ripen and be sweet and juicy.
The main part of grape growing is planting the right vine for the climate you are in. Always check with the local Agriculture Agent to see what type of grapes is best for your area.
Another place you can get information about what type of grape to plant is a nearby Agriculture College, or a grape grower in your area. You most likely will be able to find a vine that is suited for your area and climate. Make sure that where ever you get your information that they know whether you are planting table grapes or wine grapes, it makes a big difference. Table grapes are usually large grapes without seed and thin skins, where wine grapes are small, thick skinned and contain more sugar.
A very important part of grape growing is the trellis the grapes will climb on. In the wild grape vine climb up trees, buildings and anything that will support them that they can climb. But, you will need your vines low enough that you can pick the grapes when they are ripe.
The best trellis system is to cement post into the ground that is strong enough to hold the grapes up even in heavy wind and rain. The post should be braced so they will not lean in any direction. After the cement has set up around the post you can run two rows of stainless steel wire on the post for the vines to run on. When the grape vine get long enough to reach the bottom wire you will need to train the vines to run the wire by loosely wrapping the vines around the wire. As the vines grow they will wrap themselves tightly around the wire making a great support for the fruit.
In about three years when the vines begin to produce fruit you may need to add some fertilizer to the roots of the vines. Make sure the fertilizer is needed by taking a soil sample. You do not want the soil to be too rich or the plants will start producing more leave and vines that are not wanted instead of taking the nutrients from the soil and producing grapes. Also remember you will need to keep the vines pruned for best results. The main thing is to enjoy growing grapes.

Owning your own vineyard may sound like a dream, but in most cases it starts in individual’s backyards. Even though it takes a little time for your first harvest, the end result will definitely be well worth the wait. There are only two things you need to successfully grow grapes; location and sunlight.
In order to make this happen it’s important to learn the basics behind growing grapes. Something as simple as structure can easily be overlooked, but if you use a trellis it can support your vines and help them grow properly. Unfortunately, if you don’t have the right location picked out, the trellis won’t matter. It’s a crucial part of the planning, and eventually the end result. However, some people can’t plant their grape vines in sunlight and get enough airflow. If this occurs you can still grow vines, but you will have to guide them towards the light. Keep in mind; vines naturally seek out sunlight so they can flourish.
Over time the vines will be heavier due to the grapes shaping up quite nicely. It’s your job to provide a durable support system to hold everything in place. Oh, let’s not forget about the soil either. While it’s not as essential as location or sunlight, it will play a major role. After all, grapes need good soil in order to grow, and poor drainage will help them stay moist at all times. Are you ready to plant your vines? If so; make sure you dig a huge hole where the roots will be able to stretch and grow.
We would also recommend soaking the vine roots for at least 2 hours (preferably 6) so they are well watered. The best time to grow grapes around your home is during the spring time. The climate is a bit warmer, the rains will come, and it will allow your vines to find their own path throughout the rest of the year. Once everything is setup you have to be realistic about the results. There will not be a harvest during the first year. During this time you will have to maintain your vines by trimming them. If you keep up with this you could see a harvest the following year.
A lot of individuals won’t be able to harvest a substantial amount of grapes to stock the wine cellar, but they are a great alternative hobby. All you need to do is provide the right care and decision making to create unbelievable looking grapes. Neighbors will flock to see what you’ve done, because everyone wants their own vineyard. Heck, there might even be a time when you turn those grapes into wine. Don’t get ahead of yourself though, because the growing process should be mastered first. This is an extremely rewarding hobby, and if you know how to grow the grapes it will be a simple process.
There are many different things and factors on which the growth of the grapes depends. If you are thinking about the grapes how to grow them at home then you should not worry about anything. It is quite easy and simple to grow them at home. The grapes need full sun, some timely care as well as moderate water. There are different types of grapes which can be grown in your garden and when you want to know that how to grow grapes at home then you should consider all the different types of grapes. These three types of grapes include wine (such as Chardonnay or Cabernet), slipskin (concord) and table (Thompson seedless or red flame).
How can we grow grapes at home? You do not need any previous knowledge or skill of growing the fruits at home. By following certain steps and procedures you can grow grapes at your home. First you need to select the type of the grapes. You should look for the different varieties that are available and which are suitable for your climate. How to grow grapes gets an answer if you go in a step by step manner. Once you have selected the type of the grapes, next what you have to do is to be plant the grapes from a nursery stock or cutting in a site which is present in a place that has full sun over it. If you do not know that what kind of conditions are good for grapes how to grow them then you should be careful that full sun is very much needed for the good production of the fruit.
If you want the growth to be good then you should apply a limited amount of water to it. If you want to know about the soil when you want to know how you can grow grapes then you should amend the existing soil and make it loose, loamy and fast draining.
The lovers of grapes would want to know the ways to grow grapes. The trellis is very important for growing the grapes and you can provide a great support to the grapevine which is not very stiff. The fence would make it grow longer and bigger. How grow grapes can be answered when you are following a few steps for growing them. You can save money greatly by growing them at your home and they also look very beautiful.

This 2011 – Don?t skip the chocolate: Chocolate is good for you!
According to a study commissioned by the International Cocoa Association: ?There is evidence of the cardiovascular benefits of cocoa. These benefits are not only due to the fats in cocoa (cocoa butter), but, even more importantly, because cocoa beans contain a large number of phytochemicals. These are physiologically active compounds found in plants, for example grapes, apple, tea, fruits, vegetables, etc. One group of these compounds is called flavonoids. There is a growing body of evidence about the health benefits of cocoa flavonoids.
They are powerful anti-oxidants and are believed to help the body?s cells resist damage by free radicals, which are formed by numerous processes including when the body?s cells utilize oxygen for energy. Laboratory and human studies have indicated that cocoa flavonoids can inhibit the oxidation of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL-cholesterol) associated with heart disease. There is also emerging evidence, which suggests that cocoa and chocolate may be able to contribute to reducing the risk of certain types of cancer. This beneficial property also originates from the phytochemicals in cocoa, other than flavonoids.
Chocolate consumption has also been reported to reduce the effects of Chronic Fatigue syndrome, reduce blood pressure and keep your heart healthier, according to a recent article derived from a presentation on Prohealth.com
The research, the latest which correlates eating flavonoid-rich foods with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease(1), was presented in February at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s (AAAS) annual meeting in Boston. Eating flavonoid rich foods is believed to add life to your years and years to your life.

Finger Lakes Riesling Characteristics
The Finger Lakes region is known for strong, regional aromatic whites with a focus on Riesling. Finger Lakes Rieslings are varied due to differing terroirs along four main lakes (Seneca, Keuka, Cayuga and Canandaigua) displaying regional characteristics. It is important to discover where the fruit is grown. For example, Keuka Lake?s East side expresses steely minerality in dry Rieslings produced there. Southeast Seneca yields more tree fruit (apricot/lime) flavors as opposed to say more mineral/flinty notes, though many factors can contribute to fruit expression beyond location (clone, yields, trellising, soils etc.) In other words, there are divergent approaches to Riesling lending to the various styles and flavor profiles that are found in the Finger Lakes.
